From 20th May 2020, the sale of menthol cigarettes will be banned
The European Union Revised Tobacco Products Directive (2014/40/EU) makes it an offence for manufacturers to produce menthol cigarettes and for retailers to sell menthol cigarettes from 20th May 2020. The European Union believe that a ban on flavoured tobacco will improve public health by deterring people from smoking.
- The ban also applies to capsule, click on, click & roll, crushball or dual menthol cigarettes. The ban does not apply to heated tobacco products or e-cigarette products
- Retailers must have sold through remaining stock of menthol cigarettes by 20th May 2020.
Commitment From Tobacco Companies
The Association has secured the agreement from each of the tobacco companies to credit in full, all stock, both individual packets and outers that have been placed off sale after 20th May.
This agreement will be honoured by whichever supplier you use i.e. direct, via a wholesaler, Cash and Carry or vendor.
The 4 tobacco companies/distributors have now finalised their ordering processes for the smooth wind down of the categories which had, may we remind you, a very significant 18% market share.
Each company has introduced different strategies to maintain their consumer base; their communications with you is somewhat restricted due to the COVID-19 situation but one important aspect needs to be understood by retailers; You cannot offer for sale any menthol or mentholated cigarette or fine cut/roll your own tobacco product from May 20 of this year.
