The Department responsible for implementing the DRS for plastic bottles and aluminium cans had sought the views of CSNA on how the Scheme could be implemented.
In a detailed submission to DCCAE the Association stated that retailers would be entitled to be financially rewarded for the considerable additional administrative, labour and retail space utilised in providing for the return of deposited products.
CSNA advised the Department that we would not participate in a Scheme that gave the impression that those that had the physical structure and space in their outlet to house a Reverse Vending Machine were somehow superior to those retailers accepting returns for collection/compacting.
There is a very real concern that if retailers do not participate they would see sales migrate to larger stores so it is vital that any Scheme has willing participants throughout the retail sector.
CSNA will continue to be engaged at the highest level on this very important new development.
