Newspaper and magazine publishers invariably avail of the Christmas period to increase the cover price of their titles. The Association has already received advance notification from the distributors that such changes, which do not always include changes to barcodes, will be occurring this year.
As the wholesale price is determined by a publisher-approved discount against the new RRP, it is very important that your system has the new cover price applied once the change occurs as you will incur a loss on each copy sold should you neglect to update your system.
Always remember that newspapers that are printed over a 6 day cycle have different identifying barcodes for each day Monday to Friday which will each have the same RRP but that in most instances, the Saturday editions have a different, higher RRP.
While all of this may seem obvious, it is nevertheless a fact that each year someone somewhere forgets or is unaware that their wholesale price has increased regardless of whether they increased the retail price.
To date we are aware that the following titles have plans to increase the RRP
- Irelands Own Annual Nov 25th (Christmas)
- Irelands Eye Annual Nov 28th
- Business Post Nov 30th
- RTE Guide Dec 1st
- Irish News Monday-Saturday Dec 1st– Dec 6th

** We have not been made aware whether the Reach publications (Irish Mirror, Irish Daily Star, Sunday Mirror, Sunday People and Sunday Mail or either the Express daily or Sunday titles intend to alter their prices given that they already made changes to the wholesale and cover prices in Mid-August.
Similarly, the Racing Post stable of titles ordinarily waits for the run-in to the Cheltenham Festival in Feb/March to increase the wholesale and shave a sneaky fraction off the discount!
The Belfast Telegraph and Sunday Life will also have increased cover prices at the end of December.
